In this study of a young boy with a snake around his neck, I strove to reflect his daring and exotic look.

I painted two versions of this dramatic portrait of a female Ethiopian monk, both based on a photo taken by Ronnie Mosley, a friend and talented photojournalist. This rendition is closer to the original image in its color and tone.

Female monks have a long and great history in Ethiopia. They serve the elders of the monastery. They maintain no contact with urbanized relatives and they sacrifice their lives for God.
